An Email Marketing No-No!

I received an email from an internet marketer today which quite apart from being so narrow it made it a pain to read, ended in a most bizarre way…

The final paragraph was about the marketer killing his list and went on to say I could no longer get his cash puking ideas unless I subscribed to his new list.

Now I must be honest and say the reason I think this was bizarre was largely because the narrow width of the text meant I was doing a lot of scrolling, and ended up skimming to try to get to the end of it.

So… I was not really taking it all in and when I got the the killing and cash puking bit, I immediately conjured up the mental image of being sick and dieing.

Hardly the best way to advertise a new list!

I have nothing against the marketer other than the mental image he conjured up in my mind.

As for his cash puking idea… it was something that was so far out of my comfort zone it made me skim even faster.

The point I’m making is if you want to advertise something, conjure up pleasant images in your reader’s mind, and don’t threaten them by using words like “killing.”

Don’t explain the basics of a marketing tactic which is way out of your readers comfort zone and then tell them they won’t get any more ideas like this because you’re killing your list.

Chances are your reader will immediately unsubscribe from your present list, and won’t even consider joining your new one…
